Farm Safety cost less than $10 in August
Online training provider OTrain, has reduced the cost of their pre-employment training program ‘HortCard’ to just $10 for the month of August to help improve farm safety.
“Farm Safety is everyones responsibility,” says OTrain Managing Director Shane Ridley.
“The more we can do to help farmers and workers in the picking, packing and processing of fresh fruit and vegetables remain safe on the job site, the better it is for them and the community as a whole.”
HortCard is a web based, pre-employment training program, much the same as the white card offered for the construction sector, but specific to fresh fruit and vegetables.
Delivered via the internet including a short multimedia presentation and assessment; giving workers the opportunity to complete the course in their own time, (and at their own cost) prior to arriving at site for the first time.
“This ensures that even people who have never worked in the farming sector before, arrive with the required equipment including the basics like food, water and sun protection on the first day,” Mr Ridley says.
Whilst it doesn’t remove the requirement for a grower to provide site specific training, HortCard does cover off what is consider the generic standard of risk in farming, allowing farmers to spend their ‘onsite time’ focused on site specific risks and job training.
BFVG Executive Officer Peter Hockings believes HortCard saves time and gets new workers productive sooner, which saves employers money.
“HortCard is a great initiative to further ensure safe work practices among employees and help employers continue doing their business in a cost effective, sustainable manner,” Mr Hockings says.
“We have an increasing number of growers now insisting that all new employees are ‘HortCard Ready’ and we hope that with our $10 offer in August, we can increase it even further,” Mr Ridley says.

About HortCard
HortCard was created by industry veteran Shane Ridley after identifying that majority of site inductions contained the same basic information about generic risks. To improve productivity, Shanes vision was to provide the “generic risk” content off site and allow employers to spend their time training new employees with job specific skills.
